Forgot the meson commo in the 'system damage'. Hopefully, this will be
the last 'update' for the Tigress.

I'd like to add my _very_ strong vote to this. While I recognize
there may be a need to make some changes, I would strongly object to Yet
Another Rule Set (YARS). There may be minor tweaks needed, and I could live
with that. Being personally of an engineering-geek background, I've been
following the GDW-Beta list discussions on Brilliant Lances/FF&S Done Right,
and some of that effort should probably be considered for general
integration, while other parts should probably remain "house rules."

Since you asked for inputs, I intend to try to write a little more
when I have the time, but this message seemed perfect to piggyback off of.
Thanks!

Subject: TL F Triumph Battle Tender, TL F Gallant Battle Rider
Message-ID: <Pine.OSF.3.91.960109183907.4631T-100000@hubble.sheridanc.on.ca>

The Triumph/Gallant is the standard TL F tender group, in mass production
throughout Strephon's reign (he was coronated around 1075). Gallant's
are a bit on the small side for a ship-of-the-line: it is, however, a lot
cheaper than a jumpship with equivelant firepower, armour and mobility.

Since the Fourth Frontier War, most tender groups have been kept as a
strategic reserve. This is due to the vulnerability of tender groups to
the loss/emergency flight of the tender: without the tender, the rider's
have no way to retreat from the system, and may be destroyed at leisure by
the opposing navy.

The Triumph has 465 troops as part of its standard complement: if the
tender is expected to be able to overall it's riders, or operate for over
8 months without using a naval base for maintainance, the troops can be
replaced with maintenance personnel. About 154 men are needed to provide
maintenance and overhauls for 1 battle rider.

A critical weakness in battle tenders revolves around surface area.
Most tenders use grapples or docking rings to hold their riders: however,
these items devour so much surface area that they render EM Masking unviable.
The Triumph/Gallant tender group shines in this area, as the Triumph uses
a 10% flicker black globe as both additional shielding and a 'cloaking
device', allowing the Gallants to deployed in more daring and effective
formations. The black globe was introduced rather late in the Triumph's
development, so it has it's own HPG to store energy, rather than using
the ship's jump drives.

The projected StarLord/Navarch TL F tender group, currently under
development in Core and Massilia, is expected to be the first to fully
utilize the potential of black globes in combat. With the tender using
it's immense jump drives to store energy, this tender group is expected
to revolutionize naval assaults on heavily defended systems,
substantually reducing ship losses due to massive underground meson sites.

I have seen this idea denounced a couple of times, and since I think the
inspiration of this quite correct comment may have been, in part, a post of
mine, I will clarify what I meant:

I think that, in re-releasing Traveler:The Return Of Marc Miller, the true
and lawful publisher should (though net publication or other means) release
some modules such as basic combat system or player generation; short
adventures; and background material in a free or near-free from in order to
demonstrate the quality of the product and attract new, money spending,
customers.

What's a warfleet without massive troop transports? True, in wartime
liners and other civilian starships are typically secured by the
government for this job (observe both World Wars), but for nasty naval
assaults on defended worlds you may want something more, umm, Sturdier.
With, maybe, just a *little* bit more armour.

That's where the Sudniidbaa comes in. In it's typical operational use,
it comes in when the capital ships have silences the major gun's on the
world under attack. It comes in between far orbit and 300,000 km off
said world, and releases it's deadly cargo of 50 x 50-ton troop transports,
each with between 50 and 100 men in full battle armour. It also send out 5
x 50-ton modular cutters (with a variety of possible modules in use, from
anti-air to command posts to vechile transport to cargo), and 10 x 15-ton
fighters (to gently tend to the brood as it approaches it's destination,
and provide immediate air cover when the Marines arrive.)

If a classic orbital assault is needed - with the troops being
individually shot out of the missile tubes to the drop zone - the
Sudniidbaa has 30 missile barbettes, permitting 150 men (max: this
excludes cargo and ECM packages) to be launched from far orbit every 30
minutes.

These ships are actually commanded by Imperial Marine officers, rather
than Imperial Navy men. Each ship holds 2,500 men standard, enough for a
full regiment of marine infrantry. The following notes come from the
Rebellion Sourcebook (MegaTrav), pg. 36
Regiment: A regiment is composed of several battalions.
It is commanded by a colonel.
Battalions: A battalion is composed of several companies.
It is commanded by a lieutenant commander.
A battalion is the basic military unit in the Imperium.
                It contains approximately 500 men.
Companies: A company is composed of several platoons.
It is commanded by a captain.

Note also that the 2,600 Marines carries are housed 4 to a large
stateroom. If neccessary, the staterooms can be 'hot-bunked', allowing
7,800 Marines to be transported.

Note the Sudniidbaa is capable of jump4, G5. It's capable of keeping up
with most naval strike forces, but will 'hang back', as it lacks a spinal
mount. It can defend itself, but isn't meant to attack: that's the job
of it's mates.

Also note that the Sudniidbaa does not carry extensive fighter wings, nor
is it meant to carry armoured battalions. The Imperial Marines are
currently working on a way to 'package' Trepida grav tanks and Astrin
grav APC's so they will fit into Yolanda docking rings. The first
prototypes are expected to be ready in 1117.

NOTE: The Sudniidbaa is actually built to G6 specifications. However,
due to it's cargo load and transports, it cannot go faster than G5. Once
it's cargo and transports have been dropped off, however, G6 performance
can be reattained.

*****-----

The TL F 50-disp ton Yolanda Troop Transport is taken from Classic Trav's
'Fighting ships', and altered beyond recognition. The armour have been
pumped up to 100 levels, sensors and EM masking has been added, and an
optional 'heavy anti-personnel' laser put in place of the missile
turrent. Finally, 2 sandcasters and 2 fusion guns have been added to the
transport.

If the troops are being sent to a 'low-threat' landing zone, the lasers,
sandcasters and additional fusion plant is removed, allowing 100 troops to
be sent rather than fifty.

Please note the extraordinary ranges for these damages. These lasers
make fine anti-air and anti-missile weapons. Their damages at eyeball
combat ranges are devistating, and can cut clean through battle armour
(though NOT through many combat vechiles, like, say, the Trepida main
battle tank...). Even in Exotic atmospheres, these lasers make nice
minor-league orbiting assault platforms.

(ie, using data from the Reformation Coalition Equipment Guide, it can be
deduced that standard orbit around Earth is about 120 km up (20 km times
the size digit of the UWP = orbiting distance, if memory serves). In
standard atmosphere, these lasers can cause 19 dice of damage - though
they cannot penetrate through armour.)

Also note that all these settings are using 2 shots per turn. I don't
have time to compute damage at lower ROF (say, 25, or 10...) shots per turn,
but damage even then is probably BAD.
